Nominations open for Australia Day Awards

Time is running out to nominate for the West Tamar Council's 2025 Australia Day Awards, with entries closing on November 25.

Each year, the Council recognises those individuals and organisations within the West Tamar municipality who have made a noteworthy contribution or have provided an outstanding service to the community over a number of years.

West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl said that outstanding contributions and community service includes areas such as: education, health, fund-raising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and well-being of a community.

Nominations are accepted in the following categories:
      - Citizen of the Year
      - Young Citizen of the Year
      - Young Sportsperson of the Year
      - Community Event of the Year
      - Community Group of the Year

Earlier this year, award-winning educator Jane Bovill was named the 2024 West Tamar Citizen of the year at a gala ceremony at the Tailrace Centre in January.

"Jane is one of the most esteemed and celebrated figures in Tasmanian education and she was certainly a very deserving winner of our 2024 Citizen of the Year award," Mayor Holmdahl said.

"Our Australia Day Awards recognise those in the West Tamar community who have made outstanding contributions to the region - and there are so many who would be deserving winners in all of those categories.

"They all represent hard work and selflessness, often over a number of years, and reflect true Australian values."

All residents of the West Tamar municipal area are eligible and nominations of non-residents who have made an outstanding contribution to the community will also be considered.

The selection panel for the awards comprises the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors.

Nominations will close on November 25, with the awards to be presented at Council’s Australia Day Celebrations in early 2025.
