Tamar Valley recognised for destination excellence

In an exciting achievement for Tasmanian tourism, Launceston and the Tamar Valley have been ranked fourth in the Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel Destinations for 2025.

The prestigious guide highlighted the region’s renowned wine industry, breathtaking natural landscapes, and the much-anticipated opening of the Fermentation Hub, which is currently under construction at Legana.

West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl said she was extremely proud of the recognition, emphasising the Tamar Valley’s growing reputation both nationally and internationally for its premium cool-climate wines.

"The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s oldest and largest wine region, home to some of the most impressive and successful wineries and vineyards in Australia,” Mayor Holmdahl said.

"This acknowledgment from Lonely Planet - while an incredible honour - simply reaffirms what we already know: that the Tamar Valley offers a world-class tourism experience.

Mayor Holmdahl also welcomed Lonely Planet’s recognition of the Fermentation Hub.

"From Council's perspective, it’s incredibly exciting to see that the Hub is already making an impression, even before its doors have opened," she said.

"Once operational, this facility will serve as a centre of excellence, fostering start-up fermentation businesses and further enhancing our standing as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy."

Mayor Holmdahl also acknowledged the many hardworking, accomplished tourism operators in the West Tamar who were listed in the publication - specifically Narawntapu National Park, Timbre Kitchen at Legana, as well as Platypus House and Seahorse World at Beauty Point.

"As a premier destination on the world stage, the Tamar Valley has so much to offer," Mayor Holmdahl said.

"This recognition is a fitting reward for all the industry's hard work and passion."
